Education lights the way through ecclesiastical fog |
|
We aim to educate any and all who wish to learn more about the atheist-freethought community. Many of us arrived at our "state" of disbelief after spending years worshipping the Judaeo-Christian-Muslim god. |
|
| In these pages we hope to show the reader how atheism came to be more "mainstream" today than it was 300 years ago - prior to "The Enlightenment". Prior to this time there were many skeptics and unbelievers but because their feelings and opinions could lead to their imprisonment, torture, and death, they remained silent for the most part. | |
Before the enlightenment, the dissenter usually spoke his mind knowing he was at risk. His fellow citizens (and family) would rather kill him than listen to his clear sweet voice of reason. I use the masculine here because rarely were women allowed to participate in matters of state and church, let alone the household. |
The web site Religious Tolerance.Org does a creditable job explaining the conflict between atheists and religious groups. It also looks at the intolerance between the thousands of religious groups extant. It is a good place to educate yourself - not just about atheism but religion as well. For an idea what law-abiding atheists, agnostics and freethinkers are up against, check out what some of our country's religious "leaders" think about how their beliefs should be addressed: HATE! Recently published, "The End Of Faith", by Sam Harris, boldly purports to shed light on the dangers of religious intolerance. While Mr. Harris may strike a nerve with those of us who might seek rapprochement rather than confrontation, it is still essential reading for non-believers, in our opinion.
